Museum's history

Museum of Lithuanian Education History is one of the oldest museums in the independent Lithuania. It was established in Kaunas in 1922. Its initiator and long-term director was a biology teacher, textbook author, librarian and public figure Vincas Ruzgas (1890–1972). During the interwar period the museum was not only a center for teacher training, youth education, but also one of the cultural life centers in Kaunas of that time. During the years of World War II the museum was not open, and during the post-war, under V. Ruzgas’s initiative, part of its collections was exposed at the Methodological Office under Kaunas city Education Department.
In 1958, the Education Museum was reorganized to the Republican Education Museum. It was given premises at Laisvės al. 24, which had been its property before the World War II. The first stationary exposition of Lithuanian education history was held there (author Pranas Juozapavičius). In 1979, the museum was transferred to other premises in Žaliakalnis, Žemaičių g. 85. These premises were specifically adjusted to the museum‘s needs. In 1986, a consistent historical scientific exposition about development of education in Lithuania was installed there. After the restoration of Lithuania‘s independence the Government of the Republic of Lithuania returned the building, where the museum was, to its rightful owners, the Franciscan sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus monastery. The museum had to be moved again. In 2000, the museum was relocated to the premises which were not adapted to museology. In 2000, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Lithuania transferred the museum manager rights to Kaunas County Administration. Having reconstructed the building in Vytautas Avenue in Kaunas, after the forced brake, the visitors were welcomed in the Vincas Ruzgas memorial room, which was established in 2005. In 2006, a modern museum with its new conception was introduced. Since 1-July 2010 the museum‘s rights and obligations have been transferred to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The museum acquired the name Museum of Lithuanian Education History. The museum collections feature more than 50 000 unique exhibits from the education history. The museum valuables are being investigated, described, thematic expositions are being held. Live museum education, renewed expositions adapted for the interactive activities, events and social projects bring joy to the museum visitors.
