October 15, 2025 – January 10, 2026 The Lithuanian Education Museum is hosting an exhibition by renowned Lithuanian artist Žygimantas Augustinas entitled “The Need for Image.”

About the exhibition

The exhibition “The Need for Image” presents two image studies: “The Case of K. Donelaitis” and “The Descendant Project,” which reveal how images of people who cannot be seen or photographed are created. The research is based on portraits that continue and at the same time question the Western European portrait tradition. They are all united by the pursuit of “authenticity,” which, in the author’s opinion, is based on the questionable opposition between objectivity and subjectivity. The aim of the study is to experimentally examine how subjective images function in the discourse of objectivity and scientificity.

The exhibition will be held at the Lithuanian Education Museum (Vytauto pr. 52, Kaunas).
