Collection of photographs

2025 April 3

The collection of photographs is one of the museum’s most extensive collections. It contains over 6,000 portrait and group photographs and vignettes. Particularly valuable are the photographs and vignettes from the early 20th century, which commemorate the activities of the first Lithuanian educational societies – the teachers’ courses, meetings, and other initiatives organised by them. Photographs from the period of the First Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) are also of particular significance, showing the most prominent public figures, educators and pedagogues of the time, who contributed to the development of the state’s culture and education. A large part of the collection consists of photographs revealing the activities of inter-war educational and training institutions and the realities of school life.

They show the buildings of various types of schools, their surroundings and capture significant moments of school life, such as student festivals, excursions, sports competitions, exhibitions, etc.

Participants of the Kaunas Sun Society teacher training course. Among the participants were Juozas Vokietaitis, Tomas Ferdinandas Žilinskas, Vincas Nacevičius, priest Konstantinas Olšauskas and students of the preparatory class. Kaunas, 1909-1910.
